Carol Wincenc – Flute

Carol Wincenc has appeared as a soloist with the London, Chicago, Houston, Detroit, and Pittsburgh symphonies, the Netherlands Concertgebouw, and the Warsaw Philharmonic. She has made appearances with Lincoln Center Great Performers and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She has toured to Asia, Europe, Russia, South Africa, and South America. She has commissioned pieces and given premieres of work by Rouse, Heggie, Tower, Foss, Gorecki, and Schoenfield. Festivals where she has taught include Aspen, Aldeburgh, Budapest Spring, Marlboro, Mostly Mozart, Norfolk, Santa Fe, Spoleto, Sarasota, and Music@Menlo.  In 2011, she received the National Flute Association (N.F.A.) Lifetime Achievement Award and in 1978 won first prize in the Naumburg Flute Competition. She has received Fulbright and N.E.A. soloist grants. Wincenc is a Grammy award nominee and she has recorded for the CRI, DG (with Emerson Quartet), Decca, Naxos, Nonesuch, Music Masters (Recording of Special Merit with Andras Schiff), and Telarc (Diapason DOr Award for Rouses Flute Concerto) labels. She is a member of the N.Y. Woodwind Quintet and Trio Les Amies with Nancy Allen and Cynthia Phelps. She was principal flute player with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra from 1972-77. Wincenc is a board member with the N.F.A., Naumburg Concerts, and the Concert Artists Guild. She is a recipient of the Manhattan Schools distinguished alum award and awards from Brevard Music Center and the New York Flute Club. She has adjudicated for the Rampal, Kobe International, and Fischoff flute competitions. She has served on the faculties at Indiana University, Rice University (1986-93), and Stony Brook University since 1998.  Wincenc studied at Oberlin and received her bachelors degree from Manhattan School of Music. She received her masters degree from Juilliard. She holds diplomas from the Santa Cecilia and Chigiana Academies. She has studied with Moyse, Gazzelloni, Lora, Baron, Willoughby, Tipton, Delaney, and Jos Wincenc.
